Account fees

Bankingab 5 J.
What your bank charges for your current account: €0 (direct banks) to €15/month (branch banks). Comparing pays off – over 10 years you can save up to €1,800.

Account fees (Kontoführungsgebühren) are the monthly costs of your current account. The differences between banks are huge:

Typical costs in Germany (2026):

• Direct banks (ING, DKB, comdirect): €0/month (often linked to conditions such as incoming payments)
• Neobanks (N26, Revolut): €0 (basic account)
• Sparkasse: €5–12/month
• Commerzbank: €5–10/month
• Deutsche Bank: €6–12/month

Calculation: €10/month × 12 months × 10 years = €1,200 for a current account. With a direct bank: €0. Savings: €1,200 – without any loss of convenience.

Tip: check once a year whether your account fees are fair. Switching takes 15 minutes online – and the new bank takes care of moving your standing orders (account switching service).

Did you know? In 2021 Germany's Federal Court of Justice ruled that banks may not simply impose fee increases through their terms – they need your active consent. Many customers got money back as a result.
