Online banking security

Sicherheitab 9 J.
How to protect your online banking: use secure devices, keep software up to date, avoid public networks, check account activity.

Online banking is safe if you follow the basic rules – but fraudsters are getting ever more sophisticated.

Fraud figures for Germany:

• Approx. 90,000 banking fraud cases per year
• Germany is the second-largest phishing target in the world (14% of all global phishing emails)
• Over 80% of Germans use online banking

The 5 most important protective measures:

1. Two-factor authentication (2FA): blocks 96% of all phishing attacks. ALWAYS activate it!

2. Don't click links in emails: banks NEVER send links by email. Always type the bank's URL directly.

3. Set transfer limits: reduce the daily limit (e.g. to €2,000). Limits the damage in case of fraud.

4. Keep devices up to date: always update your operating system, browser and banking app.

5. Avoid public Wi-Fi: no banking on open networks (café, airport).

Current scams 2025:

• Quishing: fake QR codes on parking meters/charging stations
• Deepvoice: AI voice cloning imitates bank advisers
• Smishing: phishing by text message ("Your parcel is waiting")

Blocking hotline if you suspect fraud: 116 116 (free, 24/7, also from abroad)

Did you know? More than 80% of Germans use online banking. About 130,000 fraud cases a year – two-factor authentication would have prevented 95% of them.
