P-account (garnishment protection account)

Bankingab 13 J.
Germany's garnishment protection account: protects a basic amount (€1,410/month, 2026) from creditors if your account is garnished. Any current account can be converted into a P-account free of charge.

A P-Konto (garnishment protection account) protects your subsistence minimum from garnishment in Germany. If a creditor has your account seized, a basic allowance remains protected – you can continue to pay rent, groceries and insurance.

Allowance (2026): approx. €1,410 per month (adjusted annually). The amount increases if you have maintenance obligations (children).

How to apply? Every bank must convert your current account into a P-Konto free of charge. A request is enough – no reason needed.

Important: you may only have ONE P-Konto. And: apply for it if possible BEFORE a garnishment happens. Afterwards it gets more complicated.

Did you know? Germany has more than 3 million P-accounts. Everyone has the right to convert – the bank must do it within 4 business days.
