Commuter allowance
Steuernab 9 J.
In Germany, deduct 30 cents per kilometre of the one-way distance to work from your taxes (from km 21: 38 cents). With a 30 km commute, that saves about €600 in tax a year.
The Pendlerpauschale (commuter allowance, officially distance allowance) lets you deduct the cost of travelling to work from your taxes in Germany:
Rates (2026):
• Kilometres 1–20: €0.30 per kilometre (one way)
• From kilometre 21: €0.38 per kilometre
Sample calculation: 30 km one way, 220 working days:
20 km × €0.30 × 220 = €1,320
10 km × €0.38 × 220 = €836
Total: €2,156 in income-related expenses. At a 30% tax rate: €647 in tax savings.
Important: applies regardless of the means of transport – also by bike, on foot or in a car pool.
Did you know? The commuter allowance costs the German state more than €6 billion a year in lost tax revenue. With a 30 km commute it saves employees €400–700 a year.
