Savings plan vs. lump sum

Investierenab 9 J.
Should I invest monthly through a savings plan or all at once? Statistically, the lump sum is better – but the savings plan is psychologically easier and the right path for most people.

One of the most common questions when investing: savings plan (monthly) or lump-sum investment (everything at once)?

Lump-sum investment – the numbers:

Studies show: in approx. 70% of cases the lump-sum investment beats the savings plan – because markets rise in the long term and your money is in the market sooner.

Savings plan – the advantages:

✅ No "bad timing" risk (cost-average effect)
✅ Psychologically easier (no agonising over the "right moment")
✅ Fits your monthly salary
✅ Automated – no active decision needed

Recommendation:

• You have €50,000 in your account? → invest 60% right away, the rest via a savings plan over 6–12 months
• You receive a monthly salary? → a savings plan is perfect
• You're afraid of a crash? → savings plan – the cost-average effect takes away the fear

Did you know? Vanguard study of 90 years of US market data: in 68% of cases, a lump sum beat a 12-month savings plan. But the 32% of cases where the savings plan was better were exactly the crashes – the psychologically hardest times.
