Parental leave and career

Familieab 13 J.
Plan parental leave without a career dip: in Germany you are protected against dismissal during parental leave. Part-time work is possible (15–32 hrs/week). Here's how to negotiate your return plan.

Parental leave without a career slump (Germany):

Your rights:

✅ Protection against dismissal: from application until the end of parental leave (apply max. 8 weeks before the start)
✅ Part-time: you're entitled to 15–32 hours/week during parental leave
✅ Return: entitlement to an equivalent position (not necessarily the same job)

Financial planning:

• Parental allowance: 65–67% of net pay (max. €1,800/month, 12+2 months)
• ElterngeldPlus: 50% of the parental allowance, twice the duration – ideal with part-time work
• Partnership bonus: 4 extra months if both work 24–32 hours/week

Tips for returning to work:

✅ Discuss a return plan with your employer BEFORE parental leave
✅ During parental leave: stay in touch (team events, standing in at meetings)
✅ Further training during parental leave = a plus point when you return
✅ Consider part-time during parental leave – keeps your career and income going

Did you know? In 2024 more than 25% of fathers in Germany took parental leave – in 2006 it was only 3%. The trend is rising because more and more companies view fathers' parental leave positively.
