Money check at 50

Planungab 9 J.
The final stretch: prepare your portfolio for withdrawals, plan your pension, renovate property if needed, put your estate in order. You'll retire in 15 years – are you ready?

Your financial plan from 50 – the final sprint to retirement:

1. Prepare your portfolio for withdrawals

• Slowly reduce the equity share (e.g. from 75% to 50–60%)
• Increase the safe share (overnight money, fixed-term deposits, bonds)
• Keep 2–3 years of living costs as a buffer in safe investments

2. Plan your retirement in concrete terms

• When do you want to retire? At 63 (with deductions)? At 67 (standard age)?
• Calculate your pension gap: pension + private provision ≥ 80% of your last net income?
• Partial pension possible? (From 63, partly retire and partly keep working)

3. Renovate your property

• If you live in your own home: check renovation needs BEFORE you retire
• Replace heating, roof, windows while you're still earning
• Use subsidies (KfW, BAFA)

4. Put your estate in order

• Check/update your will
• Make gifts (use the allowances every 10 years!)
• Sort out your digital estate

5. Plan health insurance in old age

• In statutory health insurance: contributions fall (only calculated on your pension)
• In private health insurance: contributions can rise! If necessary, switch to the basic tariff

Did you know? From 50, the pension gap becomes concrete. The expected statutory pension for today's 50-year-olds in Germany: about €1,400 gross. After tax and health insurance, about €1,100 remains.
