Broadcasting fee (GEZ)
Alltagab 5 J.
Germany's public broadcasting fee: €18.36 a month per household – whether or not you own a TV. Mandatory for every household since 2013. Exemptions only for recipients of citizen's income or BAföG.
The Rundfunkbeitrag (broadcasting fee, colloquially "GEZ") is a compulsory levy for every household in Germany – regardless of whether you use ARD, ZDF or Deutschlandradio.
Facts:
• Amount: €18.36/month = €220.32/year
• Per dwelling: not per person! In a shared flat only one person pays
• Since 2013: no longer device-dependent (previously only with a TV/radio)
• Exemption: for recipients of Bürgergeld, BAföG, basic income support, asylum seekers' benefits
Tip for students: if you receive BAföG, you can get a full exemption – apply at rundfunkbeitrag.de with your BAföG notice.
Did you know? The broadcasting fee brings in about €9 billion a year – making it the largest media funding system in Europe.
