Impulse purchase

Psychologieab 5 J.
An unplanned, spontaneous purchase – often triggered by emotions, advertising or “special offers”. Studies show that up to 40% of all purchases are impulse buys.

An impulse purchase is a spontaneous, unplanned purchase that you make without thinking about it first. The brain releases dopamine ("feel-good factor"), but the high fades quickly – and regret sets in.

Typical triggers:

• Emotions: boredom, stress, sadness → "retail therapy"
• Time pressure: "Only available for 2 more hours!"
• Social proof: "Already bought 5,000 times!"
• Checkout proximity: sweets and small items at the till

Remedy: the 24-hour rule: before you buy anything that costs more than €20, wait at least 24 hours. In 80% of cases you'll decide against it.

Did you know? Studies show that up to 40% of all in-store purchases are impulse buys. Online shops have an even higher rate – because “one-click buying” minimises the hurdle.
