Keeping up with the Joneses

Psychologieab 5 J.
The urge to keep up with the lifestyle of neighbours and friends: a new car because the neighbour has one, an expensive holiday because colleagues talk about theirs. One of the biggest money destroyers.

"Keeping up with the Joneses" describes the social pressure to imitate the consumption of the people around you.

Typical examples:

• The neighbour buys an SUV → you need one too
• Colleagues post Maldives holidays → the Baltic Sea is suddenly "not good enough"
• Friends own a house → you feel like a failure in your rented flat
• Instagram shows designer clothes → H&M is suddenly embarrassing

The problem: you're comparing your inner life with other people's outward image. You see the SUV but not the loan. You see the holiday but not the overdraft. Most people who "look wealthy" are exactly that: wealthy-LOOKING – not wealthy.

The antidote:

✅ Only compare yourself with your former self (not with others)
✅ "Wealth is what you don't see" – real wealth is the money you DON'T spend
✅ Your net worth (assets minus debts) matters more than your lifestyle

Did you know? The phrase “Keeping up with the Joneses” comes from a 1913 US comic strip. Social pressure to consume was already a problem more than 100 years ago – social media has only amplified it.
