Cryptocurrency

Wirtschaftab 13 J.
Digital money without a central bank: bitcoin, ether and thousands more. Based on blockchain technology. Very volatile and risky as an investment.

Cryptocurrencies are digital means of payment that work without banks. Instead of a central bank, thousands of computers worldwide control a shared ledger – the blockchain.

Best-known cryptocurrencies:

• Bitcoin (BTC): the first and largest, launched in 2009. Limited to 21 million units.
• Ethereum (ETH): the second largest, with smart contracts (automatic contracts)

Warning: cryptos are extremely volatile – Bitcoin has lost 50% of its value within a few weeks before. Not recommended as an investment for beginners and children. Learn the basics first (saving, ETFs), then experiment with a small amount if you want.

Did you know? The first real-world bitcoin transaction took place in 2010: someone paid 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas. Today those bitcoins would be worth more than €500 million.
