Liquidity
Liquidity describes how quickly and without loss you can convert an asset into cash.
Liquidity ranking:
• Highest liquidity: cash, current account (available immediately)
• High liquidity: instant-access savings (1–2 days), ETFs and shares (sold the same day, money after 2 days)
• Medium liquidity: fixed-term deposits (only at the end of the term), bonds (sellable, but price fluctuations)
• Low liquidity: property (sale takes months), works of art, collections
• No liquidity: pension entitlements (can't be paid out early)
Why does it matter? Your emergency fund has to be highly liquid (instant-access savings). Long-term investments (ETFs) can be less liquid. A property is a good investment, but you can't just "quickly" take €10,000 out of your house.
