NFTs – what became of them?

Trendsab 13 J.
Non-fungible tokens: digital “certificates of ownership” for art, music, trading cards. Hype in 2021/22 with million-dollar sales. 2024/25: 95% of NFTs are worthless. A warning against speculation.

NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are unique digital proofs of ownership on the blockchain. Every NFT is one of a kind – unlike Bitcoin, where every coin is the same.

The hype (2021–2022):

• Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs: up to 3 million dollars each
• Beeple's "Everydays": 69 million dollars at Christie's
• CryptoPunks: up to 23 million dollars
• Total market 2022: over 25 billion dollars in sales

The reality (2024–2026):

• 95% of all NFTs have completely lost their value
• Trading volume: −90% compared with the peak
• Many celebrities who promoted NFTs were sued
• Most NFT marketplaces have closed

What remains: the technology (digital property rights on the blockchain) has potential – for concert tickets, ID documents, certificates. But as an object of speculation, the NFT hype was a textbook bubble.

Did you know? A 2023 study by dappGambl analysed 73,000 NFT collections: 95% had a market capitalisation of $0. The average NFT owner has lost almost their entire investment.
