Emergency fund strategy

Sparenab 9 J.
A plan for building a financial reserve: calculate the target amount, set a monthly rate, save in an instant-access account. Only then invest in ETFs.

The emergency fund strategy is the first step in any solid financial plan. Before you invest, before you pay off debt (except expensive overdraft debt), you build up a reserve.

Step 1: calculate your target: 3 months' net salary for singles, 6 for families. With €2,500 net, that's €7,500–15,000.

Step 2: set up a standing order to a separate instant-access savings account. Start with what you can – €100, €200 or €500 a month.

Step 3: as soon as the emergency fund is full, redirect the standing order to your securities account and start your ETF savings plan. Secure first, then invest.

Did you know? According to an ING study, 31% of Germans could not pay an unexpected €1,000 expense from their own funds.
