Long-term care insurance

Versicherungab 13 J.
Mandatory insurance in Germany in case you need care in old age. Contribution: about 3.4% of gross pay (split between employer and employee). But it only covers part of the care costs.

Long-term care insurance (Pflegeversicherung) is compulsory insurance in Germany that covers part of the costs of care if you need care in old age.

Contribution (2026): approx. 3.4% of gross pay (childless: 4.0%). Split half and half between employee and employer.

The problem: the statutory long-term care insurance does not cover the full costs. A care home place costs €3,000–5,000/month. The insurance pays €770–2,005 depending on the care level. You pay the difference (the "own share") yourself – on average approx. €2,400/month.

Care levels:

• Care level 1: minor impairment
• Care level 2: considerable impairment
• Care level 3: severe impairment
• Care level 4: most severe impairment
• Care level 5: most severe with special care requirements

Did you know? More than 5 million people in Germany currently need care. Forecast for 2050: over 7 million. Care costs are one of the biggest financial risks in old age.
