Rürup pension

VersicherungErwachsene
Private pension in Germany with tax advantages. Contributions are 100% tax-deductible. Especially worthwhile for the self-employed and high earners.

The Rürup-Rente (basic pension) is a tax-subsidised retirement plan in Germany that is particularly attractive for the self-employed and high earners.

Tax advantage (the main reason):

• Maximum deductible contribution 2025: €27,566 (single), €55,132 (married)
• 100% tax-deductible (since 2023)
• At a 42% marginal tax rate: up to €11,578 in tax savings per year

Who is it worthwhile for?

• Self-employed: no access to Riester/company pension – Rürup is the only subsidised option
• High earners (42%+ tax rate): maximum tax effect
• Freelance professionals: doctors, lawyers, architects without statutory pension

The disadvantages (honestly):

• CANNOT be cancelled! No early access to the money
• Only as a pension: no lump-sum payout possible
• Not inheritable (except to spouses/children as a survivor's pension)
• Full taxation: the later pension is taxed in full

Contracts in Germany: only approx. 2.7 million – far fewer than Riester (16 million).

Did you know? There are only about 2.7 million Rürup contracts, even though since 2023 contributions have been 100% tax-deductible – up to €30,826 a year.
