Wallet (crypto)

Digitalab 13 J.
A digital wallet for cryptocurrencies. Hot wallet (online, convenient, less secure) or cold wallet (offline, more secure, for larger amounts).
🇩🇪 The detailed explanation is only available in German so far – help translate it!

Eine Krypto-Wallet ist dein „Portemonnaie“ für Bitcoin und Co. Sie speichert nicht die Coins selbst, sondern die privaten Schlüssel, die den Zugang zu deinen Coins auf der Blockchain ermöglichen.

Zwei Haupttypen:

Hot Wallet (online):

• App auf dem Smartphone oder Browser-Extension
• Beispiele: MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet
• Pro: Schnell, bequem, für tägliche Transaktionen
• Contra: Verbunden mit Internet = angreifbar für Hacker

Cold Wallet (offline):

• Hardware-Gerät (USB-Stick-ähnlich)
• Beispiele: Ledger, Trezor (80–200€)
• Pro: Nicht mit Internet verbunden = extrem sicher
• Contra: Umständlicher, Gerät kann verloren gehen

Goldene Krypto-Regel: „Not your keys, not your coins“ – wer seine Coins auf der Börse lässt (statt in eigener Wallet), riskiert Verlust bei Pleite der Börse (siehe FTX-Skandal 2022).

Did you know? An estimated 20% of all bitcoins ever created (about 3.7 million BTC, worth more than $200 billion) are lost forever – because their owners forgot their private keys or passwords.
