Tax class (Steuerklasse)
Steuernab 9 J.
Determines the amount of wage tax in Germany. 6 classes: I (single), II (single parents), III/V and IV (married), VI (second job).
The tax class (Steuerklasse) in Germany determines how much wage tax is withheld each month. There are 6 classes:
Class I: singles, divorced, widowed – standard deductions
Class II: single parents – relief amount (€4,260/year)
Class III: married (partner earns little/nothing) – lowest tax
Class IV: married (similar income) – same deductions as I
Class V: married (counterpart to III) – highest tax
Class VI: second and side jobs – highest deductions
Important: the tax class only changes the monthly advance payment, not the annual tax burden. After the tax return, everything is balanced out.
Did you know? Tax classes III and V are expected to be abolished from 2030. Married couples will then automatically get the factor method of tax class IV.
