Unemployment rate
Wirtschaftab 9 J.
The share of unemployed people in the total labour force. Germany 2026: around 5.5–6%. Below 3% is considered full employment. Big regional differences (Bavaria: 3%, Bremen: 10%).
The unemployment rate measures what percentage of the population willing to work has no job.
Calculation: (unemployed ÷ labour force) × 100
Germany (2026): approx. 5.5–6.0% = approx. 2.7 million unemployed.
Regional differences (huge!):
• Bavaria: approx. 3.5% ("full employment")
• Baden-Württemberg: approx. 4%
• North Rhine-Westphalia: approx. 7%
• Berlin: approx. 8.5%
• Bremen: approx. 10.5% (highest in Germany)
Hidden unemployment: the official rate doesn't count everyone – people in further training, on long-term sick leave (over 6 weeks) or in a "1-euro job" are not counted as unemployed.
Did you know? Germany's highest unemployment rate since the war was in 2005 at 13% (almost 5 million unemployed). Afterwards, the social system was restructured with the “Hartz reforms”.
