Your first German tax return is almost always worth it: employees get €1,095 back on average. With tax apps it only takes 30–60 minutes.
Your first tax return is easier than you think and almost always worthwhile:
Step 1: choose a tax app (WISO Steuer, Taxfix, SteuerBot). Cost: €15–40 – but the refund is almost always much higher.
Step 2: have your annual wage tax certificate from your employer ready (it arrives automatically in spring).
Step 3: the app guides you through all the relevant details with questions and answers: commute to work, insurance, home office days, training courses.
Step 4: submit via ELSTER. The refund arrives after 4–12 weeks.
Tip: a tax return is worthwhile even as a student! In Germany, study costs can be carried forward as a loss.
