Midijob (transition zone)

Arbeitab 9 J.
Germany's transition zone: earnings of €538.01–2,000/month. Reduced social security contributions for the employee – the employer pays the full share. Especially relevant for part-time workers.

A midijob (formerly "sliding zone", since 2019 "transition range") is employment with earnings between €538.01 and €2,000 per month in Germany.

What's different from a normal job?

• Employee: pays reduced social security contributions (sliding from ~0% up to the full rate)
• Employer: pays the FULL employer share (unlike a minijob!)
• Pension entitlements: full pension entitlements (!) – unlike a minijob

Sample calculation (€800/month, 2026):

• Normal job: the employee pays approx. €160 in social security contributions = €640 net
• Midijob: the employee pays approx. €90 in social security contributions = €710 net
• Savings: approx. €70/month = €840/year

Who benefits?

• Part-time workers with 15–25 hours/week
• People returning to work (after parental leave, illness)
• Pensioners with a side job
• Students who earn more than a minijob

Did you know? The transition zone was extended in 2019 from €450–850 to €450–1,300 and again in 2022 to €520–2,000 (€538.01–2,000 since 2024). Many more employees now benefit.
