Interest

Krediteab 9 J.
The price of borrowed money. When saving, you receive interest (reward). With a loan, you pay interest (cost). Stated as a percentage per year.

Interest is a fee for borrowed money. Whoever lends money (e.g. you to the bank via overnight money) receives interest. Whoever borrows money (e.g. you from the bank via a loan) pays interest.

Current interest rates (2026):

• Overnight money: 1–3% (you receive)
• Fixed-term deposit: 2–4% (you receive)
• Mortgage: 3–4% (you pay)
• Instalment loan: 4–8% (you pay)
• Overdraft: 10–15% (you pay)

Loans have two interest rates: the borrowing rate (pure interest) and the effective interest rate (borrowing rate + all additional costs). Always compare the effective interest rate!

Did you know? The ECB's key rate was 2.75% at the start of 2026. This rate indirectly determines how high interest rates are for savers and borrowers.
