Rechtab 9 J.
A state rent subsidy in Germany for people on low incomes. Massively expanded since 2023: up to €370/month. Many don't know they're entitled.

Wohngeld (housing benefit) is a state rent subsidy in Germany for people who work but earn too little to pay their rent entirely by themselves.

Who is entitled? Low earners, pensioners with a small pension, single parents, families on low incomes. Since the housing benefit reform of 2023, significantly more people are entitled than before.

How much? It depends on income, rent, household size and place of residence. On average approx. €370/month (after the 2023 reform). But it can also be €100 or €600.

Where to apply? At the housing benefit office of your town/municipality. Online applications are possible in many federal states.

Important: housing benefit excludes Bürgergeld (either/or). Housing benefit is for people who work but earn little. Bürgergeld is for people looking for work.

Did you know? Since the 2023 housing benefit reform, about 2 million households are entitled – three times as many as before. Many don't know and give away money.
